30 Second Wing Awning – Dome Tent Water Resistance Test

Test Details

Date: 02 February 2024

Time: 13h08-13h38

Weather Conditions: Clear and sunny

Wind: Mainly NNW 5.1km/h to 14.2km/h

Method of Test

Wind speed, wind direction and temperature measured with a Kestrel 5500 portable weather station which has a certificate of conformity traceable to NIST.

Rain was simulated using 16mm vinyl hose and adjustable rose.

Initially the rose was set to simulate light rain. The dome tent was thoroughly and continually doused for approximately 10 minutes. No leaking was observed inside the dome tent, even after rubbing against the interior walls to try and induce seepage.

The hose was then adjusted to simulate heavy rain. The dome tent was again thoroughly and continuously doused for approximately 20 minutes. Again, no leaking was observed even after rubbing against the interior walls to try and induce seepage.

Observations

It was observed that with the water pressure directed across the top of the dome tent towards the top zips, a small amount of seepage occurred. If the tent door was open and the ground sheet pulled out further than the top of the door, a couple of drips did manage to land on the dome tent floor. It was be noted that horizontal rain is unlikely to occur, unless you are experiencing hurricane-like conditions.

With any camping tents, there is always a chance that there may be some imperfect stitching where seepage may occur. There are products available to apply to these areas to prevent this from happening.

Conclusion

The dome tents should be considered water resistant rather than water proof and are not suitable for use as shelter in extremely wet conditions.

Wind Rating

The Toughest Awning Around

As we have all experienced, many an awning has been destroyed due to the wind. Due to our sturdy construction, our awnings can withstand a strong breeze and steady wind without the need for poles and ropes – we say 10/15 knots is the time when you should put the additional pole and ropes in.

Just like undertaking any outdoor adventure, it’s best to be conservative in our setups as wind is not a constant, whilst the wind may be blowing 20 knots one minute, next minute a gust of 30 knots may come through – so use your discretion and use the down a pole if you think it needs it, and a tie down if it’s incredibly wind.

Be assured in the knowledge that the 30 Second Wing Awning is the toughest around. Refer to our warranty for more information.

A tip to be extra safe is to face your vehicle in to the wind as this creates down pressure on the awning and be assured in the knowledge that on a windy day when everyone else is packing their awning away, you’ll probably still be enjoying your 30 second Wing Awning and all the shade it offers.
